Tokyo struck me as a city with the inhibited desire to break from its traditional Japanese interiority. I tried to find and admire the disappearing culture of the Tanizaki’s lament from In Praise of Shadows, but I discovered a new, equally fascinating culture. In the clash between inside and outside, new kinds of shadows and a new kind of city emerge.
